From the Tempest

(Translation of Desde La Tempestad)

Joint communique from the Congreso Nacional Indígena (National Indigenous Congress) and the EZLN about the cowardly police attack against the Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educacion (CNTE) and the indigenous community of Nochixtlán, Oaxaca.

June 20th, 2016

To the People of Mexico.
To the People of of the World:

In the face of the cowardly repressive attack against the teachers and the community of Nochixtlán -- with which the Mexican State reminds us that this is a war against everyone -- as the peoples, nations, and tribes that are part of the Congreso Nacional Indígena (National Indigenous Congress) and the Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (Zapatista Army of National Liberation), we say to the dignified teachers that they are not alone, that we know that reason and truth are on their side, that the collective dignity with which their resistance speaks is unwavering, and that this is the main weapon of those of us who come from below.

We repudiate the escalation of repression with which they seek to impose the capitalist neoliberal "educational" reform nationwide, primarily in the states of Oaxaca, Chiapas, Guerrero, and Michoacan. they want to crush the dignity of the teachers in rebellion With threats, persecution, beatings, unjust imprisionments and now assassinations.

We call on our people and on civil society in general at all times to be with the teachers who resist, to recognize ourselves in them; since the violent dispossession of basic labor guarantees in order to privatize education is a reflection of the violence with which they are are dispossessing us indigenous people, campesinos, and city-dwellers.

Those who rejoice in power decided that education, health, indigenous and campesino territories, and even peace and safety, are commodities for those who can afford them; that rights are not rights but products and services to be snatched, dispossesesd, destroyed, or overcome according to the dictates of Capital. And they are trying to impose this aberration in a bloodstained fashion; by murdering and disappearing our comrades, sending our spokespeople to high security prisions, transforming outright torture into a government trademark, and, with the help of the paid media, likening what is most valuable in Mexican society - those who struggle, those who do not surrender, those who are not for sale and who do not give up- to criminals.

We demand an end to the represssion against the teachers' struggle and the immediate and unconditional release of ALL political prisioners.

We invite all people, rural and urban alike, to be attentive and in solidarity with the teachers' struggle, to organize ourselves autonomously to stay informed and alert to this storm that falls on everyone, knowing that a storm, in addition to the tempest and chaos, also fertilizes the earth from which a new world is constantly being born.

From the mountains, countryside, valleys, canyons, and neighborhoods of the original peoples, nations and tribes of Mexico.

Never again a Mexico without us!
